CERF+’s Commitment to Work-Life Balance

balance - 1

Work-life balance is an important part of overall wellness for employees across all fields, and CERF+ recognizes that the nonprofit sector is especially prone to burnout, poor work-life balance, and excessive time demands. Our commitment to generosity, inclusion, and care manifests in the way we organize resources, interact, communicate, and connect with others. This philosophy is also extended to our employees, and we are dedicated to providing a work-life balance, benefits, and resources that genuinely empower and support our team. To this end, we decided to be proactive by piloting a four-day workweek for our staff.

The pilot program began June 2 and runs through September 5, 2025. During this period, CERF+ staff work Monday through Thursday, with Fridays off. Prior to June 2, full time employees worked Monday through Friday. During the pilot period, we will determine whether this model is suitable for CERF+. The pilot will offer an opportunity to step back from work more regularly and deeply to have time to recharge. As we move through the pilot, staff have committed to open dialogue, participation, and adaptability. At the end of the pilot, we will conduct an assessment. Other models exist, and we will remain open to adjustment or even a complete return to the five-day workweek if necessary.

CERF+ takes pride in being a forward-thinking organization. However, the four-day work week is not a new concept even among nonprofits. Research shows that companies and organizations that have implemented the four-day work week increased employees’ productivity and job satisfaction. By focusing on outcomes, we have a rare opportunity to offer our staff an extra day to do what is most important to them. Providing greater autonomy, choice, and flexibility without increasing our costs will hopefully increase general well-being, reduce burnout, increase creativity, reduce the number of sick days taken, and create a more equitable work environment, especially for caregivers.
