Jean was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan. Her childhood included a world class art museum, Motown music, Jewish scrap metal businesses, a family that valued creativity and humor, and strong neighborhood schools. Experimental education has always been a primary influence on her point of view. She earned a BA at University of Michigan’s innovative Residential College and an MFA with a cohort of multi-disciplinary artists at Idaho State University. She enjoyed a long academic career teaching at The Evergreen State College and is now Faculty Emerita. She is a working artist and an arts advocate. She served as a member and chair of The Washington State Arts Commission and the Olympia Arts Commission. She currently serves on the board of Olympia Artspace Alliance, developing affordable live/work/exhibit spaces. Most recently, she was selected by the Olympia City Council to serve on the committee that will structure their Cultural Access Program.
