On March 5-6, 2022, a supercell thunderstorm produced widespread, devastating tornadoes in Central Iowa from Winterset to Newton, tracking just southeast of the Des Moines metropolitan area. Seven fatalities and numerous injuries were reported, and six of those fatalities occurred in Madison County. An official with Madison County Emergency Management confirmed that the tornado damaged or destroyed 52 homes.
